Wertheim Batiks: My batiks are created using the traditional artform of batik. I alternate multiple layers of hot wax and dyes to create designs on silks. In building up these layers wax and dyes, I can achieve a unlimited number of colors as well as the beautiful unique effect, only achieved through batik, of the miniscule spider web color lines that appear throughout the silk in each color of the dyes. The wax is removed through ironing. The silk batiks are then incorporated into my silk wearable art.
Wertheim Shibori: My arashi and nui shibori techniques are achieved through wrapping and stitching the silk using fine thread and line. The dyes are then applied, cured and set to create one-of-a-kind silk wearable art.
Wertheim Silk Painting: My silk painting using the French Serti technique. Serti means “to enclose” which reflects that I enclose each area of my design. I then paint those areas with fine sume-e brushes using my techniques of watercolor blend, discharge and flash. This results in magnificent fascinating colors, designs and one-of-a-kind silk scarves.
*** All dyes and colors are permanent on the silk.***
